STUDY RESOURCES

You can use this to identify possible self-study materials.

If you attend the live classes, the text is your primary resource; most students find it helpful to supplement studies with law school study aids and guides.

ustaxcourt.gov – The Court’s Web site contains information about Tax Court and how to obtain copies of materials available through them (including purchasing selected prior exams and the Tax Court Rules – the Rules are required for the One Year Study Class program).

starkman.com – Jay Starkman, CPA wrote about the exam and provides free download of some prior exam questions.

ali.org – American Law Institute Web site contains possible resources for Tax Court study.  Watch publication dates; material most likely is professional quality and useful (however, do not rely solely on dated information in your studies).

amazon.com – commercial Web site contains possible resources for Tax Court study; watch publication dates and know not all material may be of sufficient professional quality to assist study efforts.

gleim.com – source of possible study material for Federal Taxation.  Gleim’s Federal Income Tax, Exam Questions and Explanations is required for the One Year Study Class program.

BNA (Bureau of National Affairs) – We recently learned that Portfolio #630-3rd entitled Tax Court Litigation was discontinued by the publisher. It may be possible to obtain copies, but be aware that recent changes in Tax Court rules and jurisdiction are not included.

In a Nut Shell series published by West Publishing Co, St. Paul, MN - the FRE book is helpful (but not sufficient as your only source of study), but the Professional Responsibility book is not recommended.

NITA (National Institute for Trial Advocacy) from Notre Dame Law School publishes Federal Rules of Evidence with Objections (approx $22), which covers hearsay and other objections with cross references to the appropriate FRE. Call 800.225.6482, or fax 219.282.1263, or see Web site (nita.org).

Emanuel Law Outline Series guide Evidence (approx $20) was useful (www.emanuel.com or bookstores).   NOTE: There are many Evidence resources available to assist in this study area, including work books, flash cards, and other study aids.  A trip to the local law school bookstore is helpful.

The Law Bookstore carries new and used law textbooks and study aids (including the Multistate Review Tapes or CDs on Evidence and Evidence and Federal Income Tax flashcard sets). The staff is helpful and knowledgeable, prices are reasonable, and UPS or US mail shipping is available everywhere.  They are located at 1775 W. La Palma Avenue, Anaheim, CA 92801 - call Greg or Nicole at 800.810.0120, or 714.491.BOOK (491.2665) or see their Web site (www.thelawbookstore.com).
